At the time of the Inundation the Tannery of the Claimants was in full operation, their Stock in Trade therewith was of the value at cost of upwards of £17,000, great part of this stock was in process of Tanning in the Tan Pits. The Tannery was entirely under water. Several of the Buildings forming part of the Tannery were carried away. The Tan Pits were filled with Mud and Refuse Matter containing Iron and the Liquor therein was destroyed and rendered unfit to complete the Work Required. The Claimants were unable to deal with the damaged goods having no accommodation for or ability to do the Work necessary to get up such parts of the Completed Stock as had been damaged or to carry on the work of Tanning such hides as were in process of Tanning, their pits being rendered altogether useless. All the Hides in the pits were deeply stained and rendered unmarketable in the trade of the Claimants. The Claimants were therefore advised as the best course in order to reduce the Damages and lighten the loss to sell all the damaged Stock and Goods, which they accordingly did in the Month of April 1864. The result of such sale appears in Part 1 of this Schedule and the Claimants seek to recover the difference between the Cost price of the damaged Goods sold and the prices actually realised at the said sale as shewn in said Part 1 of the Schedule as follows. |
