Claim for loss of property #5062 – Particulars

No. of Claim Name of Claimant Description of Claimant Address of Claimant
5062 John Fisher Gentleman 1 Cheney Square, Sheffield
Nature of Claimant’s Interest   Particulars of Claim Amount of Damages Claimed
Lessee for the residue of a term of 800 Years   For damages to nine Houses and a Shop situate at Hill Foot opposite the Hill Foot Weir in Sheffield all of which were much damaged by the Inundation, and for which damage I have paid.
Henry Hills, Joiner, for repairing broken Doors Windows Shutters, etc. £6 16s 4d
Men for removing Sludge, Stones, etc., out of the Houses and from the Premises £3 7s 6d
Six of the Houses and the Shop were occupied at the time of the Inundation. Four of the Tenants left immediately, and a Tenant who had taken one of the empty Houses would not come until 6th June. I lost on the last named House 12 Weeks Rent amounting to net £2
And on the other four Houses (two only of which I have recently been able to let) Rents amounting to (net) £16 2s 8d
The dampness of the Houses, and the feeling of apprehension still entertained, have hitherto prevented me obtaining Tenants for the other Houses. I am told and believe, that the Property has permanently depreciated in Value. It cost me £640, and I believe I could not now get £440 for it.
During the time the Property was being cleaned and repaired I was on the premises every working day, for 6 Weeks, during the whole of the day, and with spade and broom assisted in the work, in order to make the houses tenantable as soon as possible, and I am confident that my constant supervision of the Workmen has materially lessened the expense of the Water Works Company. ~ For the depreciation of the property, loss of Tenants, loss of my time, and interest on money paid, I claim only £36 11s 7d
To Mr. Ezra Watson, Mason, for re-building Walls, and repairing external and internal injuries £49 12s 7d
William Glave painter for painting and papering the damaged ~ parts of the Houses £5 9s 4d
        £120
